I noticed on my area there are a lot of people driving around in honda civic Si’s as if theyre legit race cars. I check the spec’s on them and its nothing special at all. I know hondas are reliable and fairly easy to tune but why does even that drives a "Vtec" Si’ act as if they drive a Twin Turbo Supra so to speak?
Vtec is like waiting for bad sex. You get all of the turbo lag, with none of the boost.
Every time I see a honda (all but the S2000 and NSX, got nothing but respect for them), I laugh when they rev their little toy. Honda= Hold On, Not Done Accelerating
honda hp are decent considering there low weight, its the tq that it lacks but when vtec came around it was BIG now adays all companys have there own vtec like toyota has the vvtl-i or something like that and etc and im not a big honda fan but when it hits vtec mode they do pull but if you have the tq you can take them……but if they have a good built ls/vtec or similar its kind of a wrap lol but in cali hondas are always geting stolen and stripped, also cops tend to pull them over more and pop there hood for illegal mods
ps when vtec came out in the early 90s it did kind of encourage other car makes to have similar systems
personally I was not impressed with the Si either. the HP is too low and the supercharger does not do enough to compensate for that. my husbands 07 saturn ion redline would beat the brand new Si on acceleration, top speed, and handling. my opinion on the Si is that its a beginners race car, and those who buy it will eventually graduate to bigger and better things like the caddilac cts-v.
a stock si is not a race car, but they are far cheaper than a camaro ss or a nissan z.theyre peak hp numbers don’t seem high but keep in mind its in a naturally aspirated four cylinder engine.what great about them is that they have tons of aftermarket support and endless build possibilities. i have seen an si make 500 hp with a turbo kit on a stock engine.
If you’re curious what a dramatic VTEC engagement feels like…go drive the S2000 (either motor will do, but the 2.2 litre in the newer models is a little more pronounced).
You arent gonna notice vtec in a new car plain and simple. but go drive a 92-95 civic coupe or hatch with a b16A in it and you’ll notice vtec.
In love.
I had an s2k and that thing was a little monster…
VTEC.
I heard this on the radio.
To this day, there has never been a recorded or known instance of a Honda VTEC engine failing or dieing from high mileage or old age. They last forever as long as you don’t get bored and sell it.
The new 2012 201HP Civic Si goes from 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds. The same 0-60 time as a NA Supra, 986 Porsche Boxster, Mazda RX-8, late 90′s Ford Mustang GT, late 90′s Chevy Camaro Z28, Infiniti G35 Coupe Mitsubishi Eclipse GTV6.
It is as fast as cars that are much more powerful with larger engines. The Civic is small, light, and aerodynamic. It does not need that much power to go fast.
VTEC engines are also popular because of their redlines. They all reach more than 7000rpm. Civic Si’s and Honda S2000′s reach 8000-9000rpm. That is race car territory. The Porsche 911 GT3 and Ferrari 458 reach 8000-9000rpm. It basically is a low power race engine made to handle a beating. With headers, exhaust, intake, turbo kit, you can make 300-400HP on these engines and still drive reliably. It does not take long to get to 5000-6000rpm. These engines rev pretty fast.
The TSX is much slower than the Civic Si plus the TSX is a luxury car made to be quieter and smoother. It is much heavier so it does not go nearly as fast.
Personally, I would not buy one. I have one problem with them. Handling and Steering. While handling is good, there is too much body roll. Also, I don’t get enough steering feedback or response. The 263HP Mazdaspeed 3 is more fun to drive and handles better and goes slightly faster. Eventhough there is a huge power difference, the Civic Si still keeps up posting a laptime of about 2 seconds slower than the Mazdaspeed 3 as tested on Edmunds’ www.insideline.com
